Privacy Policy

Last updated:

This policy explains what information ReadCraft collects, why, and the choices you have. We have tried to keep it plain and specific to how the app really works.

Who we are

ReadCraft is a product of Craftsman Labs. We run the ReadCraft website and app, where you can keep a shelf of the books you read, get book suggestions and follow other readers.

If you have a question about this policy or about your information, write to us at thecraftsmanlabs@gmail.com.

What we collect

We collect what you give us and what the app records as you use it:

  • Account details: your email address, your password (stored by our sign-in provider as a protected hash, never as plain text), and sign-in session data.
  • Sign in with Google: if you choose "Continue with Google", Google tells us your name and email address, and may also send a link to your Google profile picture. We use the name and email to create your account. We do not store or use the picture link. We never receive your Google password, and we do not read your Google contacts, mail or files.
  • Profile: your name and username. If you choose to add them: date of birth, city, gender and a profile photo.
  • Your reading: the books you save, your shelves (including shelves you create), your reading progress, and the dates you started, finished or expect to finish a book.
  • Social activity: who you follow and who follows you, follow requests, accounts you block, people you hide your reading activity from, and the notifications about follows and requests.
  • Book finder choices: the genres, authors, books, reading habits and language you type or pick when you ask for recommendations.
  • Technical data: the information any website receives when you visit it (such as your IP address and browser type), which our hosting and sign-in providers handle to deliver the service.

Your date of birth, city, gender and email address are optional or account-level details. The app's profile and search functions do not show them to other readers. Other readers can see your name, username and profile photo, and your reading activity as your privacy settings allow (see section 6).

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • create and run your account and keep you signed in;
  • show your shelves, progress and profile, and show your profile and reading activity to other readers according to your privacy settings;
  • make book recommendations from the choices you give the finder;
  • tell you about follows and follow requests inside the app;
  • keep the service safe and working, including blocking and hiding features, and fixing problems.

We do not use your information for advertising, and the app does not include advertising or analytics tools.

Services we use

We use the following services to run ReadCraft. They process information on our behalf, or, for the book catalogues, receive the searches the app makes:

  • Supabase provides sign-in, our database and file storage. Your account, profile, books, social activity and profile photo are stored there.
  • Google Gemini (an AI service from Google) writes the recommendations. When you ask for recommendations, we send it the finder choices you gave (genres you like and want to avoid, favourite authors and books, how often you read, preferred length and language) and the titles of up to 100 books already in your library, so it does not suggest books you have. We do not send your name, email address or user ID to it.
  • Google Books and Open Library are book catalogues. The app sends them the book searches you type, and the titles and authors it needs to look up suggested books, to find details and covers.
  • Our hosting provider serves the website and app and sees the technical data described above.
  • Email delivery: sign-up and password-reset emails are sent through our sign-in provider's email service.

Book covers may be loaded from Google Books, Open Library or, for books you add yourself, the web address you entered. When your browser loads a cover from one of those sites, that site can see your IP address.

We do not sell your personal information.

Cookies and local storage

ReadCraft uses cookies and browser storage only for the app to work:

  • Session cookies set by our sign-in provider keep you signed in and are removed when you sign out or they expire.
  • Local storage in your browser remembers your choices on that device: your theme (light, dark or system), your preferred view of your shelves and profile, and your last book finder answers. This stays on your device; we do not receive it. You can clear it in your browser settings, and the finder has a "Clear saved choices" button.

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.

Account privacy and your controls

You choose who sees your reading activity:

  • Public account: signed-in readers can follow you right away and see your reading activity.
  • Private account: follow requests need your approval, and only approved followers can see your reading activity. Switching from private to public approves any waiting requests.
  • Hide activity: you can hide your reading activity from a specific person.
  • Block: blocking someone removes any follows between you, removes follow notifications between you, and hides each other's profile, lists, activity and photo.

You can change these at any time in the app. Profiles and reading activity are shown only to readers who are signed in.

Recommendations can also show a reader which of the people who follow them have a suggested book on a shelf. That only happens for people whose activity the reader is already allowed to see under these settings; it never includes people who have hidden their activity from the reader or who are blocked.

How long we keep information, and deleting it

We keep your information while your account exists so the app can work for you.

There is currently no delete-account button in the app. To delete your account, email thecraftsmanlabs@gmail.com from the address you signed up with. When an account is deleted, its profile, books, shelves, follows, blocks, hidden-activity settings and notifications are removed from our database. We will also remove your profile photo from storage.

You can remove individual books, shelves and your own profile details, and unblock or unhide people, yourself in the app at any time.

You can also write to us to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, or to correct it.

Security

We use established services for sign-in, storage and hosting, and we limit who can read each piece of data. Data in the database is protected by access rules so that, for example, you can read your own account details but other readers cannot. Profile photos are stored privately and shown through short-lived links.

No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute protection. Please choose a strong, unique password and tell us right away if you think your account has been misused.

Children

ReadCraft is meant for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, email thecraftsmanlabs@gmail.com and we will remove it.

Using ReadCraft from other countries

Our service providers may store and process information in countries other than your own. By using ReadCraft you understand that your information may be transferred to and handled in those places. We will handle it as described in this policy wherever it is processed.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as ReadCraft changes. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email.
